6 common Affiliate Marketing Mistakes you should avoid

Affiliate marketing is a common way for website owners to make an income from their traffic. Whether you are a seasoned marketer or just getting started, here are six pitfalls that are worth avoiding:

1. Promoting in a saturated market
The more people there are promoting a particular product the more competition. If you come across a popular item or one that pays high commission, you should always ask yourself, 'how many others are promoting this same item?'

A simple search can always give you an idea of how much competition you are facing. You also shouldn't target products that nobody's gonna have an interest in, the challenge is finding the right balance.

2. Promoting products you have no interest in
If you have no real interest in a product or clear knowledge of it, chances are, it would show through. As a result, you are less likely to convince others to buy the product. A good approach to affiliate marketing is to see it as recommending a product to your site's visitors.

3. Lack of pre-selling skills
To many affiliates, promoting is simply a case of placing a banner on their site. That approach is fine if the banner on its own is compelling or if you're promoting a well known product, if however what your promoting isn't familiar to your visitors, it might do with some pre-selling.

Provide as much information as possible; things like price, features, benefits and if you can compare it to other alternatives. Ensure that by the time your visitor clicks on the banner they already know all they need to know about the product. This way, you are likely to get more sales than if visitors click simply to findout.

4. Commission amount Vs Quantity
Some products seem more attractive because of the high commission payouts but you should always consider how many you are likely to sell each month.

For example:
If Tony is promoting Audi cars and is being paid £200 per referral and Gordon is promoting Audi spare parts and is paid £10 per referral. Gordon is likely to make more money because there are more people buying spare parts than there are buying cars.

With that in mind, you should always investigate how much demand there's likely to be before deciding to promote a product.

5. The Spread strategy
Some affiliates are led to believe that their chances of success are improved if they promote as many products as they can. This approach can work if you are part of a team of people or have plenty of time that you can dedicate enough to each product.

If you don't have such resources, it is better to stick to a select few products, this will enable you to run your campaigns effectively.

6. Presentation
If you have a poorly designed website, nobody will take you seriously. If you focus too much on selling, it can impact negatively of your site; too many banners, biased reviews and misleading information, these are all things you should avoid.

Keep in mind that visitors come to your site for your content not adverts, make your adverts look like a service for their convenience, not the main purpose of your site.
